SŌRYU -CONRAD NAGOYA-

Aichi Prefecture has long stood as one of Japan’s great centers of manufacturing and craftsmanship. Its industrial culture emerged from the region’s historic waterways-most notably the Nakagawa Canal and Horikawa River-which once served as vital arteries for transporting goods, people, and ideas. As artisans moved along these routes, techniques in woodworking, textiles, ceramics, and other crafts were exchanged and refined, forming a cultural identity rooted in making. Over generations, this spirit of ingenuity became a defining element of Nagoya’s urban character.

Set within the heart of Sakae, the Japanese dining venues at Conrad Nagoya reinterpret these regional narratives through a contemporary lens. Framed by sweeping views from the 40th floor, the design draws inspiration from both the enduring legacy of craftsmanship and the waterborne culture that shaped it, creating an immersive dining destination unlike any other in the city. By contrasting the experiences of sushi and teppan dining through the themes of stillness and movement, the project offers guests a layered journey of discovery.

At the center of the sushi venue SŌRYU stands a monumental counter carved from a 350‑year‑old Kiso hinoki cypress—an heirloom of nature elevated to architectural centerpiece. The surrounding palette is intentionally restrained: handcrafted plaster, dark timber, and black granite compose a quiet, dignified atmosphere that amplifies the counter’s presence.

A delicately woven timber lattice encircles the space, its pattern inspired by textile weaving, one of the region’s historic industries. The screen defines the dining environment with softness rather than enclosure, while integrated glass cubes and silverleaf accents shimmer like points of reflected light, introducing subtle rhythm and a sense of gentle movement. Semi‑private dining areas, illuminated by bespoke chandeliers reminiscent of suspended water droplets, offer intimate variations of the overall experience. Against the backdrop of Nagoya’s skyline, the interplay of craft, conversation, and atmosphere creates a timeless moment of stillness.
